A complete packing list for a worry-free walking holiday
Are you planning a hiking trip soon? Or are you thinking about booking a walking holiday? Good preparation is half the battle! It makes the difference between enjoyable walks and days spent mostly dealing with discomfort.
Experience Hikes organizes small-scale hiking trips in Mediterranean destinations such as Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Morocco. We primarily schedule our trips for the spring and autumn. Daytime temperatures are often pleasant—ranging between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius—though mornings can be cool, and you might encounter an unexpected rain shower 🌦️.
With the right gear, you’ll be prepared for anything and able to fully enjoy the nature, culture, and hospitality along the way. To help you prepare optimally for your hiking holiday, we are happy to share our own experiences as well as those of our partners, Fora Zakynthos and Slow Travel Sardinia.

🌿 Preparing for a walking holiday well
On our walking tours, we hike through diverse landscapes:
🌊 coastal paths, ⛰️ mountainous areas, 🌳 olive groves, and authentic villages. The routes are leisurely but often involve changes in elevation and unpaved paths.
With the right clothing and gear:
✅ you walk more comfortably;
✅ you prevent blisters and fatigue;
✅ you are prepared for changing weather conditions;
✅ you fully enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
🥾 The right hiking boots make the difference
Good shoes are the foundation of any walking holiday.
We recommend comfortable walking shoes with a sturdy, high-traction sole.
Before setting off, check that your shoes:
👣 are well broken-in;
🦶 provide sufficient grip;
💦 are water-resistant;
😊 feel comfortable during long walks.
It is better not to take new shoes on a trip for the first time.
Break them in beforehand to avoid painful blisters.
👕 Hiking clothes: dress in layers
The Mediterranean climate is delightful but can be surprisingly changeable.
So, be sure to pack:
👕 Breathable hiking shirts
👖 Long hiking trousers
🩳 Convertible trousers or hiking shorts
🧥 A lightweight fleece or jacket
🌧️ A waterproof rain jacket
👖 Rain trousers (optional)
The layering principle allows you to easily adjust to the temperature.
😎 Protect yourself from the sun
The Mediterranean sun is strong in spring and autumn, too.
Therefore, always bring:
🧢 Hat or cap
🕶️ Sunglasses
🧴 Sunscreen
The sun can be surprisingly strong even in early spring and late autumn.
💧 Bring plenty of water and light snacks
Staying hydrated is perhaps the most important part of your preparation. We recommend:
🥤 Short walks: at least 1 liter of water
💦 Longer walks: at least 1.5 liters of water
Drink small sips regularly, even before you feel thirsty.
🍎 Energy on the go
Your body burns a lot of energy while walking.
So, bring along some light snacks, such as:
🍎 Apples, bananas, mixed nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, energy bars
🥪 If we won't be passing a restaurant along the way, a fresh sandwich or a ready-made salad from a local supermarket is a practical choice to bring with you.
Naturally, we will let you know about the lunch options along the route in advance.
🦯 Are walking sticks necessary?
Walking poles are not mandatory, but they are recommended. It is also worth noting that using walking poles has nothing to do with your age. For anyone hiking in mountainous terrain, walking poles provide essential extra support: ⛰️ during steep ascents ⬇️ on descents 🪨 on rocky paths 🦵 to relieve the knees |
