Besides the sun, the sea and the beautiful nature, there are also typical Zakynthian traditions that are worth experiencing once. One of the cultural and religious highlights on the Greek island is the feast of Saint Agios Dionysios. It is celebrated on two days: 24 August and 17 December. Dionysos is the patron saint of Zakynthos and still plays an important role in the lives of Zakynthians. In this blog you can read more about this important religious festival in Greece on the Ionian island of Zakynthos

Agios Dionysios was born on the island in 1547 to wealthy parents.

After the death of his parents, he gave his inheritance to his brother and retired to the monastery of Strofades, a group of small islands about 44 km southeast of Zakynthos.

In 1577, Dionysios was appointed Archbishop of Aegina, but due to health problems he resigned from this office two years later. He returned to Zakynthos, where he settled in the monastery of Anafonitria.

A famous legend tells how Dionysios forgave a murderer who wanted to hide in the monastery. The man was pursued and Dionysios even helped him escape, believing that he was thereby preventing future crimes.

The Canonization of Dionysios

After his death in 1622 or 1624, Dionysios' body was exhumed and found to be intact. This was considered a miracle, which led to his canonization.

In 1703, permission was given to celebrate a festival in memory of Dionysios every year on 17 December, at the monastery on the Strofades. In 1716, the relics (the remains of the saint) were transferred to Zakynthos, and this event is commemorated every year on 24 August.

Today, Dionysios' body lies in the Church of St. Dionysius of Zakynthos, which was completed in 1948. This church, with its impressive neoclassical and Byzantine architecture, is an important religious and historical monument for the island.

The processions and festivities in honour of Agios Dionysios

During the holidays of 24th August and 17th December, large processions take place through Zakynthos Town. The coffin containing the relics of the saint is carried through the town, followed by thousands of believers and many prominent figures, such as politicians, bishops, priests and military commanders. The festivities are characterised by fireworks and the honking of the ferries in the harbour, which strengthens the sense of community.

It is definitely worth experiencing these celebrations. They offer a unique opportunity to experience the rich culture and spiritual traditions of Zakynthos – an experience that will be unforgettable for believers and non-believers alike.
