The Zakynthos trip exceeded my expectations. It is a beautiful island with a great diversity of plants and flowers and fantastic views while hiking. After hiking, there was often time to sit on the beach for a while, which was within walking distance of the hotel. Ellen put together a nice, varied hiking program, with the ceramics workshop, the cooking workshop, and the visit to Zakynthos Town serving as a great addition. It was wonderful to be outdoors a lot and get to know the island in a relaxed way, thanks in part to Spiros, the local guide. The hotels were fine, and we were able to enjoy delicious food everywhere at very reasonable prices.

Zakynthos has an incredible number of flowers, plants and herbs in all possible scents and colours; a Mediterranean flora with varied species, depending on the composition of the soil and the difference in altitude.
As soon as spring comes, flowering starts from the coastal areas. The most common flowers are bougainvilleas, cyclamen, irises, wild orchids and roses. This trip is all about the beautiful flora, with special focus on discovering the wild orchids along the hiking trails.
In spring, two dimensions come together beautifully on Zakynthos: the green hills and blooming landscapes, and the impressive Easter celebrations of the Greek Orthodox tradition. It is a truly special experience to take part in them alongside the local people.
Day to Day Program
Day 1: Arrival
Arrival at Zakynthos airport. Transfer to the accommodation in Argassi where we will be staying for this trip.
Day 2: Hike Gerakas
Hike in the Vassilikos peninsula in the Gerakas area. Gerakas beach is one of the beaches on Zakynthos where Caretta-Caretta turtles lay their eggs. Lunch at the end of the walk in a nice taverna.
Day 3: Hike Keri
A hike in the area of Keri. Keri is a charming mountain village. Some houses date back to before the great earthquake of 1953. The village has been restored in a traditional manner. Along the way, we see beautiful viewpoints. We relax and have lunch in a cozy tavern.
Day 4: Hike Skopos
A strenuous but beautiful hike of Mount Skopos, with panoramic views of the villages, the hills, and the Mediterranean Sea. At the top of the mountain stands a monastery housing the Church of Panagia Skopiotissa, the oldest church on the island. Lunch at the summit, after which we descend via the other side of the mountain.
Day 5: Noon Zakynthos town, Solomos square, special event with the big cross and the big priest
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Christ.
In the afternoon we see the traditional procession in Zakynthos Town. A colorful processions adorned with flowers walk through the streets of Zakynthos Town. Bells ring, choirs sing centuries-old hymns, and a subdued atmosphere prevails everywhere.
Day 6: Procession and celebrations
Easter Saturday
Early in the morning we join the procession of crucified Jesus and a local special event with breaking of the ceramics. Late evening to church for the big celebration of the resurrection.
Day 7: Small hike and tasting traditional Easter food
Easter Sunday is dedicated to togetherness. Families gather for elaborate meals with traditional dishes, while festive liturgies are held in the churches.
Short walk in the surroundings of Agioi Pantes. Afterwards we can enjoy a late lunch with traditional Easter dishes.
Day 8: Hike Korithi and boat tour Blue Caves
Walk in the north of the island. There we board a boat for a relaxing trip across the water to the Blue caves; a series of beautiful sea caves, known for their clear blue water, formed in the limestone. The unique play of light and the crystal-clear water create an enchanting experience.
Day 9: Hike Giri - Louha
Walk in the mountainous area, starting at the mountain villages of Giri and Louha, some of the oldest and highest situated on the island, at about 550 m above sea level, close to Mount Vrachionas, the highest point of Zakynthos (756 m). This mountainous area remained relatively unaffected by the great earthquake of 1953.
Day 10: Back home.
Transfer to the airport for the flight back home.
