Day 2: Larnaca

Today is all about exploring Larnaca on foot. We start at the famous salt lake, once used for salt extraction. After that, we visit the historical buildings in the city: the Church of Saint Lazarus, a large religious building with beautiful Byzantine architecture. We also go to Hala Sultan Tekke, a serene mosque near the salt lake. Along the way, we see the old Kamares Aqueduct, built in 1746 by the Turkish governor Bekir Pascha to provide the city with water. We end the day with a walk to Larnaca Castle by the sea, with beautiful views and more insight into the history of the city.

We then visit the picturesque village of Kakopetria for a short hike and enjoy lunch in the small village of Fini, where we taste local specialties. Then we continue our route to Paphos, known for its many archaeological sites, all of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List as protected cultural heritage. We visit Nicosia, the island's capital, with a remarkable history as a divided city. During a walk through the old city walls we cross from the Greek Cypriot south to the Turkish Cypriot north. We learn about the division of the city and see interesting sights such as lively markets, historic churches, mosques and cultural centres. This day gives a good impression of the complex past and present of Cyprus.
